Teikan-en Garden in Niigata, Japan
Teikan-en is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty located in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture. It is a traditional Japanese garden that has been preserved by the Murayama family for generations.
The garden began to take shape around the time the main building, Teikan-do, was built, and it was further refined through the late Edo period and into the early Meiji period. In 1937, Teikan-en was officially designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.
One of the most remarkable features of Teikan-en is its deep moss landscape. The garden combines moss, Sado red stones, pond scenery, tea houses, and old wooden architecture. Rather than showing a strong and decorative beauty, Teikan-en reveals a quiet beauty shaped by moisture, shade, time, and careful preservation.
For me, this garden feels different from many famous gardens in Kyoto. It carries the atmosphere of Echigo, a snowy region of Japan, where moss, trees, stones, and water seem to breathe together in silence.
新潟県の貞観園について
貞観園は、新潟県柏崎市にある国指定名勝の日本庭園です。村山家によって代々守り継がれてきた庭園で、主屋である貞観堂が建てられた頃から本格的に庭づくりが進められ、江戸時代後期から明治時代初期にかけて、その基礎が整えられたとされています。
昭和12年、1937年には国の名勝に指定されました。
貞観園の大きな魅力は、庭全体を包むように広がる深い苔の景色です。苔、佐渡産の赤玉石、池、茶室、古い木造建築が重なり合い、派手に見せる庭ではなく、湿り気、木陰、年月、そして手入れによって育まれた静かな美しさを感じさせます。
私にとって貞観園は、京都の有名庭園とはまた違う魅力を持つ庭です。雪国である越後の風土の中で、苔、木々、石、水が静かに呼吸しているような、深い空気を持った庭だと感じました。
A Stone Basin Surrounded by Moss and Maple Leaves
In this photograph, a stone water basin rests quietly among the moss and young maple leaves. The surface of the water reflects the green light of the garden, creating a calm and almost meditative atmosphere.
What I find beautiful here is that the basin does not stand apart from the garden. Although it is made of stone and has a strong form, it feels naturally absorbed into the moss, shade, and surrounding trees. The maple leaves in the foreground soften the view and guide the eye deeper into the garden.
As a Japanese garden designer, I feel this scene expresses one of the quiet strengths of Teikan-en. Nothing is forced. The stones, moss, water, and trees all seem to have settled into their place over time. This is not a beauty created only by design, but a beauty shaped by age, moisture, and careful preservation.
苔とモミジに包まれた手水鉢
この写真では、石の手水鉢が苔と若いモミジの葉に包まれるように、静かに置かれています。水面には庭の緑が映り込み、落ち着いた、どこか瞑想的な空気を感じさせます。
私がこの景色で美しいと感じるのは、手水鉢が庭の中で強く主張しすぎていないところです。石でできた力のある存在でありながら、苔や木陰、周囲の木々の中に自然に溶け込んでいます。手前のモミジの葉が景色をやわらかくし、視線を庭の奥へと導いてくれます。
日本庭園をつくる立場から見ると、この一枚には貞観園の静かな力がよく表れていると感じます。何かを無理に見せようとしていない。石も、苔も、水も、木々も、長い時間の中でそこに落ち着いたように見えます。これは設計だけで生まれる美しさではなく、年月、湿り気、そして丁寧に守られてきた時間がつくる美しさだと思います。
Moss, Water, Stone, and a Quiet Wooden Building
In this photograph, the moss-covered ground, pond, stones, stone lantern, and old wooden building all come together in quiet harmony. Nothing feels separated. The building is not simply placed beside the garden; it seems to belong to the landscape itself.
The soft curves of the moss create a gentle rhythm, while the stones give the scene a quiet sense of weight. The pond on the right adds depth and stillness, reflecting the calm atmosphere of Teikan-en.
What I find especially beautiful is that this garden does not try to impress with force. Its beauty is low, quiet, and deeply rooted. The moss, stones, water, and architecture have all settled into time. This is the kind of Japanese garden that becomes more meaningful the longer you look at it.
苔、水、石、そして静かに佇む木造建築
この写真では、苔に覆われた地面、池、石、石灯籠、そして古い木造の建物が、静かに調和しています。どれか一つが切り離されて存在しているのではなく、建物までもが庭の景色の一部として馴染んでいるように感じます。
苔のやわらかな起伏が庭に穏やかなリズムをつくり、石はその中に静かな重みを与えています。右側に見える池は、景色に奥行きと静けさを加え、貞観園の落ち着いた空気をより深く感じさせてくれます。
私が特に美しいと感じるのは、この庭が力で見せようとしていないところです。低く、静かで、深く根を張ったような美しさがあります。苔も、石も、水も、建物も、長い時間の中でそこに落ち着いてきたように見える。見れば見るほど味わいが深くなる、日本庭園らしい景色だと思います。
